Care and Maintenance of Timber Windows and Doors

The poor quality of many wooden windows installed in houses in the latter half of the 20th century, taught a generation of home-owners that wooden windows rot and need constant maintenance. This led to a huge demand for UPVC windows and UPVC Doors but many home-owners have since discovered that UPVC quickly dis-colours, become brittle with age, break and cannot be easily and environmentally disposed of.

The biggest misconception about timber windows and wooden doors is that they require continuous painting to prevent them from rotting. However, if timber doesn't get wet it will never rot, and therefore a timber window with its paint coating intact will last indefinitely. Traditionally windows were made from softwood with hardwood cills and painted with lead based paint. The joints were liberally coated with lead based primers prior to assembly which had a tendency to crack, flake and peal.

Over recent years, the expected lifetime performance of timber windows has been significantly increased due to product developments within the paint industry and a greater understanding and collaboration between Paint and Joinery Manufacturers.

Research has shown that it is not just the initial coating that will give the windows long term protection, - new manufacturing techniques have also been adopted to enable the benefits of the coatings to be optimised.

As it is the coating system which is vitally important for the longevity of your new timber windows and doors, all of our joinery is supplied fully painted or stained prior to fitting. Please follow our guidelines for the correct maintenance of your new windows and doors. Click here to read more.
